Material

Mild Steel cable trays (DD11&ST37) are manufactured from continuously rolled structural steel. Rolling improves the mechanical properties of steel, allowing lighter steel to be used to support the required load. The corrosion resistance of steel varies greatly depending on the coating and alloy.

Stainless Steel (304 & 316): For highly corrosive environments (chemical plants, coastal areas, food & beverage).

Aluminum (extruded aluminum alloy 6063 and sheet 5754): Aluminum cable trays are manufactured from copper-free, structural-grade. Aluminum’s excellent corrosion resistance is due to its ability to form an aluminum oxide layer, which restores its original protective layer when scratched or cut. Aluminum offers excellent weather resistance in most outdoor applications.

Surface Finishes

Hot Dip Galvanized (HDG) after fabrication: are coated with an average zinc thickness of to 100 microns and above, applied in accordance with ISO 1461. This finish is ideal for outdoor installations, industrial zones, and corrosive environments where extended protection is essential. Hot Dip Galvanized (IG) before fabrication or Pre-Galvanized: Explanation of its use and limitations compared to hot-dip zinc after fabrication coating between 15 to 20 microns is applied as per EN 10327.

Key Standards & Best Practices

1-NEMA standards are the primary standards for cable tray construction and testing in North America.

NEMA VE 1: Cable Tray Systems This is the most fundamental standard. It defines:

  • Materials: Specifications for steel, aluminum, and stainless steel.
  • Load Classifications: Standard load definitions) and the required structural performance for each.
  • Design Requirements: Details on rung spacing, side rail height, and connection methods.
  • Finish Types: Specifications for galvanization, paint, and other corrosion-resistant coatings.
  • Testing Methods: Procedures for testing strength and deflection under load.

2-IEC 61537: Cable Management - Cable Tray Systems and Cable Ladder Systems

This is the international counterpart to NEMA standards. It specifies requirements and tests for:

  • Cable tray and cable ladder construction.
  • Classification (e.g., by material, style, and performance).
  • Mechanical requirements (load performance, impact test, etc.).

Electrical requirements (continuity of electrical continuity, impedance
